Frequently Asked Questions

What time of day is best to schedule my session?

I am a natural light photographer, so for me, lighting is everything. I try to schedule all of my sessions in the evening or first thing in the morning. I avoid the harsh midday lighting at all costs. Indoor sessions are scheduled either mid-morning or mid-afternoon.

Where should we take my pictures?

The majority of my clients do not have a specific place in mind for their session, so let that put your mind at ease. Discussing and/or scouting locations based on your desired style is all part of your session experience with Lindsay Horn Photography (and one of my favorite parts I might add!). Newborn sessions take place in the comfort of your own home. This is also an option for other types of sessions if you feel this is where you would be most comfortable.

What should I wear for my session?

A well-chosen wardrobe can make a big difference when it comes to your portraits. Your wardobe will be a key item on the agenda during our pre-session consultation, and I'm happy to be as involved as you want me to be in making your final selections. For now, here are some general guidelines to help you get started. For group pictures, it’s important to coordinate outfits, but not necessarily match. Think solids or unobtrusive patterns, as “wild” patterns will only take the focus away from you! Layers and textures can add a nice dimension to your photos. Denim always photographs wonderfully in both color and black and white. Try to avoid bright white clothing as it tends to be distracting. For individual portraits, you have a little more freedom in your wardrobe choices. Don’t be afraid to bring accessories that can really make a picture pop – scarves, fun hats, etc. This is especially true for seniors or individual children’s pictures, it’s great to let their personality shine through. Make sure to check out the What to Wear category of my blog or our Wardrobe Wednesday Facebook page for some great weekly posts on the subject.

What can I expect at my session?

Most importantly, you can expect to have fun! I like to create a very relaxed and low-stress environment where you can truly be yourselves. I like to use a mixture of poses and natural interaction to capture really timeless images. Ask any of my clients - I love talking to and getting to know you during the shoot. Do you have small children? So do I, and I will run and play with them and sing silly songs until we get those precious smiles. Do you have a shy senior? I pride myself on my ability to connect with my teenage subjects (I was there not all that long ago). Mom and Dad, be prepared for me to ask for some time alone with your older children and seniors. Sometimes it's just a little easier for them to relax when we can spend some time one on one. Overall, I want your session experience to be fun and memorable, and I believe that the images will speak for themselves!

What can I expect for a newborn session?

First of all, I love photographing newborns! There is such a short period of time when they have that “brand new” look, and for that reason it’s important to schedule this session in the first two weeks of life. Generally, they will also stay nice and sleepy while they’re still that little, and issues like colic or baby acne have not appeared yet. If you would like to book a newborn session, we can set up a tentative time based on your due date, then just keep me updated as to when your little one actually arrives and we can adjust as needed. As for the actual session, I normally schedule these either for the morning or afternoon in order to get the best natural light inside your house. I will bring my "portable studio" and a bunch of fun props, hats, and backdrops, and we can also utilize some of your furniture and personal things as well. I prefer to get babies down to their diapers (and naked), but if you have a “special” outfit you would like to use we can certainly accommodate that as well. If the weather is nice and you don’t mind, we can also take the little one outside for a few shots. I typically plan on spending 2-3 hours on newborn sessions, as there are always little breaks needed for feeding, changing, etc.

What can or can't I do with my prints or digital files?

Copyright is a very important but often misunderstood topic in the photography business. For straightforward and detailed information, read this blog post: Copyright: What's the Big Deal?

Do you have any specials I should know about?

For every person who you refer that books and completes a session, you will receive a $50 print credit (only one referral credit will be given per booked client). It pays to spread the word! Other promotions are always posted to my blog and my Facebook Fan Page (linked above), so make sure to check in frequently on those sites as well!

Why does custom photography cost more?

While I can assure you that both my session and print prices are at market price, I think it's important to address this question. When you hire me, you are not just hiring someone to come and "click" a few pictures - anyone can do that. You are hiring me to create custom artwork for your home and your family, and I hope that if you do allow me to photograph you and your family, it's because you value the work that I can produce for you. If you are interested in a detailed explanation of what goes into a single session, please take a couple of minutes to read this article: "Why Does Custom Photography Cost More?"

Is retouching of my images included with my session?

Yes, all final edited images will be retouched cosmetically as needed. This includes basic retouching such as removing blemishes and under-eye shadows, smoothing the skin, etc. Special requests in regards to retouching will incur an additional charge per image. Please contact me ahead of time with any questions or concerns.

Are my digital files available for purchase?

Yes, I do offer your final digital files for purchase with a print release for up to size 8x12. The complete set of final edited files may be purchased as part of a digital collection. Individual files are only sold with or included in collection purchases.

Do you shoot weddings?

No, I'm not shooting weddings at this time, but I would love to take your engagement pictures! I'm also happy to refer you to some stellar area wedding photographers, so feel free to contact me for more information.

I’m sold! How do I book a session?

Simply contact me via any method on the “Contact” page of the website. At certain points in the year I can book up to 3-4 months in advance, so it's never too early to contact me about your desire for a session. We will initally settle on your month of preference, and then I will give you instructions on paying your deposit (see “Payment and Policies” page). I have a 5-day grace period in which I hold your spot for you while I wait for the deposit. After 5 days I will open up that spot for booking again, so don’t delay! As the month approaches, we will finalize your exact session and consultation dates.

Where can I hear more of this fabulous music on your website?

All of the music on my site is used with permission from the amazingly talented Chris Pearson and the band Sleeperstar. You can check them out on Myspace here or on Facebook here. I promise, you will not regret it!
